20/20 Vision: Seeing Clearly for the New Year!

In the seventh grade I discovered that trees were not just green clouds on a brown trunk, but a collection of small leaves that branched out from multiple locations on that trunk and the many branches stemming out of it.  In addition, I saw for the first time that the leaves on the trees were different on each species.  Yes, you guessed it, I got my first pair of glasses.  Life changed as I saw 20/20.

Before my senior year in high school I received my first set of contact lenses.  My "look" changed and my perspective on life changed.  Sure it came with some adjustments as I learned to blink more, watch out for dusty situations, and learned proper care of those tiny lenses.  Ask me what happened to me in my first year of college!  Yikes!!!  Anyway, 20/20 vision with contacts changed me.

Fast forward fifteen years, I am now in my mid-thirties.  I finally had saved enough money to have the "new" lasex surgery everyone was talking about.  My eyelids were pulled apart and a scalpel removed my lenses, a laser made some adjustments, and then my eyes were covered for 24 hours.  I took the bandages off the next day and could see 20/20 again without glasses or contact lenses.  A miracle!  Once again my life changed, I now could see perfectly when I was in the water, I didn't have the pain of specks of dust blowing in my eyes, and had absolutely zero maintenance required with my eyes.

Now it is the year 2020 and I am grateful for sight (even though I started to use reading glasses when I turned 50).  I love seeing the world around me.  My heart and soul rejoices in the Creator's glory.  But the rollover to the year 2020 has got me thinking of this spiritually speaking.  Is my heart and soul "seeing" 20/20?

Thus the sermon series I have begun at Escazu Christian Fellowship.  Maybe you hadn't given it a thought, but I am asking the question:  how is your spirit?  Are you seeing 20/20?  Each week for a month we will look at "Messy Spirituality" from another angle, all along asking that question:  how is my spiritual growth?  Is everything well?  Can something be tweaked or does part of your spiritual walk need a laser surgery?   It is my prayer that you think about this and have a vision test as the new decade starts off so that you can see Jesus and your neighbors with a 20/20 vision.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.  Ephesians 1:18-19
